SOFTWARE for LETS
updated
at 26/12/2008
In compiling a brief update to this list, which
is still lacking in some details but otherwise links to where
further information may be obtained, we are much indebted to Hugh
Barnard. This alphabetica list includes the software we know of
(marked 'free' that is viable or 'nearly' viable (in some cases,
licensing not clear). It also includes some commercial software.
Our aim at LETSlink is to make all options known on the basis
that different programmes will suit LETS at different stages in
their development, starting with the abacus, manual ledgers and
Excel spreadsheets! We are now becoming involved in helping LETS
directly, because software which is freely given always requires
expertise to host and install, and training to use it, and there
will be an impact on the way the LETS scheme operates. Anyone
wanting to write software please see what projects are already
under way and consider joining an existing project rather than
re-inventing the wheel. Anyone who knows of software not listed
here, who has technical skills to help survey and install software,
and/or who wants to have software installed for your scheme please
contact us or go to www.cxss.info

OdLETS
This access-based programme holds member records
and does Accounts. |
At Oswestry &
District LETS we use a Microsoft Access database to hold details
of all our members, their wants and offers, and all the Oswald
transactions. We have made an empty version of the database.
It is about 300k ZIPped, and unzips to a 1.6MB database file.
It requires Microsoft Access 2.0 or later - users with later
versions of Access (e.g. Microsoft Office 95) will automatically
be asked if they want to upgrade the database to the latest
version when they first load it The database will automatically
run a main menu screen, with buttons for all the common tasks.
People familiar with Microsoft Access, who want to run ad-hoc
reports, or get at the internals of the database should use
"Unhide" in the "Window" menu to bring
up the main database window.

PyLETS
This web-based programme does Accounts.
The LETS administrator has access
to cheque entry, and the members can view the results on
the LETS website.
|
PyLETS is written in Python and runs on
Unix and Linux. It is a web-based CGI programme, and it
uses file locking for data persistence so is very low cost,
not needing a relational database backend. Nightly backups
to another site are handled by email. In practice it will
run on any platform that can do Python CGIs including Windows.
Minimum system requirements are whatever will run your web-server,
eg Apache - please refer to web server documentation.
PyLETS was first written in 2002. No support
is offered. Implementers must be willing to read source
code. The current version is 0.4, released May 2003. Development
plans include additional columns for historical turnover,
implementing year end processing. It is currently being
used by Coventry LETS, where Richard Kay is the LETS Accountant.
Feedback so far is that "it works much better than
the paper-based system it replaces".
|
'free'
- PyLETS is
free software written by Richard Kay, operating under GNU
Public License available as a free download. It is open
to user modification, and if you do modify it the license
specifies you must make source code of your changes available
to your users. Richard's contact details are: rich@copsewood.net
